Photo of the Day: Great Duck Island Lighthouse, Maine

I took this photo a few years ago when I visited Great Duck Island with some faculty and students from the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. They own the light station and use it as a research station in the summer. Students monitor the bird population on the island, including the rare Leach's storm petrel.

Great Duck Island is about 9 miles offshore from Bar Harbor. We visited Mount Desert Rock Lighthouse, well over 20 miles offshore, on the same day. It was one of my most memorable lighthousing days ever.

  1. Nice photo of Great Duck! I love the setting with the feathery clouds and wildflowers. What a thrill it was for me to visit Great Duck a few years ago on the College of the Atlantic boat to see where my first book, Captain's Castaway, took place. I could imagine Seaboy and the lighthouse keeper's daughter roaming the island. How ironic that the first sign you see on the island is No Dogs Allowed!

  2. Thanks for the comments, Angeli. That is pretty funny about the sign. Of course, the absence of dogs on the island has allowed the bird population to flourish, but it still seems like every lighthouse should have a dog.
